I want to paint the fans, dressed in Monster-gear… and eventually be able to line all the paintings up on a gallery wall and capture the Lady Gaga concert audience in all its glory.

Let me introduce to you a new series of work. In the midst of pop culture, I turn to the mid 19th century and the influence of what many consider to be the first avant-garde art movement: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (also known as PRB or simply, “the Pre-Raphaelites”). The Pre-Raphaelites rejected the teachings of the art of their time, claiming that a medieval approach to art must be revived (hence their name). According to the Pre-Raphaelites, medieval art, despite lack of perspective and “sophistication,” was created out of pure religious passion. Art wasn’t created for the sake of making a living or finding a perfect composition, it was created with the guidance of a spiritual force of self-belief. The best work can only be produced when the individual works for passion.

From this, I have adapted the Pre-Raphaelite Monsterhood series. PRM is not so much about religion as it is about the belief that we should create and act upon passion and love. It is also about you. I got to a point in the midst of all my Lady Gaga paintings where I realized that it is the Little Monsters who deserve more attention. The Little Monsters who think they are unimportant or not beautiful. With PRM I want to create a series of portraits, not of Lady Gaga, but of the unique individuals who sing so proudly in the darkness of the audience. How are you passionate?
